Can someone be punishable by law for not providing a death certificate?

Who exactly should be providing it? It is the family's responsibility to obtain the death certificate from the county records office. The funeral home sends over the paperwork to the records office then they file it. The Family has to pay a fee for each certificate. When both my parents died, the funeral home asked us how many copies of the death certificate did we want. They sent them to us. The fee was added into the funeral service. If the funeral home does not do the paperwork to obtain the death certificate then yes, it is punishable. Sometimes they have a difficult time obtaining signatures from doctors or coroners, but it is the funeral home's responsibility to fill out the initial paperwork and get it processed.
